HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Sepsis is a toxic response to infection that kills
3approximately 258,000 Americans each year; it is a leading
4cause of death for men, women, and children of all ages and
5wellness levels and is a medical emergency that requires early
6detection and treatment for survival; and
 
7    WHEREAS, No one is immune to sepsis; it can strike anyone
8regardless of age, race, color, or creed, and it strikes
9someone every 20 seconds; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sepsis kills more people in the United States than
11breast, lung, and prostate cancer combined; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The millions of lives lost to sepsis every year
13around the world are often preventable; and
 
14    WHEREAS, On July 29, 2017, the fourth annual Illinois
15Sepsis Challenge 5K Run and Walk will be held in Orland Park
16with the goals of increasing community awareness of sepsis and
17assisting sepsis survivors; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The honorary chairs of this year's walk are the
19Sappington Family; Ethan is a five-year old septic shock
20survivor; he has had multiple amputations due to sepsis;

1however, this year he is making great progress by starting to
2run with his prosthetic leg; his parents never thought this
3would happen; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6recognize the dangers of sepsis and encourage people to take
7part in the fourth annual Illinois Sepsis Challenge 5K Run and
8Walk in order to bring increased awareness to this danger; and
9be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That we declare July 29, 2017 as Illinois Sepsis
11Day; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Sepsis Alliance as an expression of our esteem
14and respect.
