1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the students of Prairie
4 | Central High School for their cemetery mapping project; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Prairie Central High School Geography teacher
6 | Andrew Quain began the cemetery mapping project in the Fall of
7 | 2015; it was important to him to not only meet classroom
8 | education standards, but also participate in a project that had
9 | lasting power, something that his "students could work on and
10 | see the results" since geography is "all about collecting and
11 | using the data"; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The biggest recent addition to the project has
13 | been the use of GPS devices, which digitally plot the location
14 | of the gravestones; although it requires the students to spend
15 | a little bit more time at the cemetery, the devices have
16 | improved the speed and accuracy of the map-making process; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Students also perform geographic analysis and
18 | research individuals buried in the cemetery; a majority of the
19 | biographical information requires students to study the
20 | gravestones and take notes; additional information, including
21 | the date of birth, the date of death, military service where
22 | applicable, and any damage to the gravestone, is also |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | collected; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Once students are finished collecting their data,
3 | the information is uploaded to create an interactive map
4 | online; when the map is complete, users will be able to search
5 | for the location and information of the graves in the cemetery;
6 | the map will be added to the cemetery project webpage on the
7 | Prairie Central website, and the geographic analysis will be
8 | stored in the school's library and made available upon request;
9 | and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Currently, the geography students are mapping
11 | approximately 3,300 graves in Chenoa Cemetery, which they began
12 | at the end of April 2018; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, To date, students have completely mapped seven
14 | cemeteries across McLean and Livingston Counties, including
15 | St. John Catholic Cemetery, Graceland Cemetery,
16 | Chatsworth-Charlotte Cemetery, Fairview Cemetery, Cropsey
17 | Cemetery, Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, and South Apostolic
18 | Christian Cemetery; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21 | recognize the students of Prairie Central High School for
22 | mapping more than 13,000 gravestones across eight cemeteries |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | within the Prairie Central School District, and we commend
2 | their work on a project that helps many people in their
3 | genealogy research; and be it further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 | presented to Geography teacher Andrew Quain as an expression of
6 | our esteem and respect.
