SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1397

 
2    WHEREAS, According to new research from the United Nations,
3growing antimicrobial resistance linked to the careless
4disposal of drugs and some chemicals is one of the most
5worrying health threats today; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Studies have linked the misuse of antibiotics over
7the last several decades to increasing resistance, but the role
8of the antibiotic disposal has received little attention; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Improvements in the use of medically important
10antibiotics will help maintain these important tools for
11disease treatment and control; and
 
12    WHEREAS, United Nations environmental scientists warn that
13careless disposal of antibiotics could produce antibiotic
14resistant bacteria; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Solving the issue will mean addressing the
16disposal of antibiotic pharmaceuticals; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the U.S.
19Congress to review existing federal laws for the disposal of
20unused antibiotics and to pass new laws to prevent the creation

1of antibiotic resistant bacteria and to fund research into the
2treatment of, and creation of, new drugs to fight antibiotic
3resistant bacteria; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
5delivered to President Donald Trump, U.S. Senate Majority
6Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck
7Schumer, U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, U.S. House of
8Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and all members
9of the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
