HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the City of Dixon on the
4100th anniversary of the Dixon Memorial Arch, also known as the
5Victory Arch; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Dixon Arch was built in May 1919 to honor
7returning Lee County servicemen; it consisted of a wood
8framework covered with beaverboard and was decorated with
9bunting, flags, and hundreds of lights; and
 
10    WHEREAS, On June 11, 1919, Dixon held a parade to celebrate
11the returning servicemen, and the route included the newly
12built arch; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Dixon Arch was originally designed to be
14temporary but was reinforced and made a permanent structure in
151924; it was rebuilt several times throughout the years and was
16widened to accommodate the new four lane road that passes
17beneath it; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1985, the original Dixon Arch was torn down
19after it could not be repaired; a new arch made of fiberglass
20was put in its place and dedicated during Veterans Day
21celebrations in 1985; it was renamed the Dixon Memorial Arch

1following its dedication; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Dixon Memorial Arch has been a mainstay of the
3city for a century and welcomes travelers and citizens alike;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Despite several rebuilds and monetary struggles,
6the Dixon Memorial Arch has stood the test of time; therefore,
7be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we congratulate the City of Dixon on the 100th anniversary of
11the Dixon Memorial Arch; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the City of Dixon.
