SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Shobha Deven Parikh of Chicago, who
4passed away on June 2, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh was born to Kanaiyalal and Kapilaben
6Shah on November 27, 1944; from an early age, she knew she
7wanted to help people; she was accepted into a medical school
8where English was spoken and learned both English and medicine
9simultaneously; and
 
10    WHEREAS, As an Emergency Room and Family Physician, Dr.
11Parikh worked for many hospitals around Chicago, including Mt.
12Sinai Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Ravenswood Hospital, Swedish
13Covenant Hospital, and Christ Memorial Hospital; she became one
14of the first female Indian doctors on Devon Avenue when she
15opened a clinic in 1981; she cared for more than 150,000
16patients during her 37-year career and treated the Indian
17community like they were a part of her family; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh hosted hundreds of spiritual events for
19the Indian community, was a member of cultural organizations,
20including Gujarati Samaj and Swadhyay, supported area senior
21centers, and generously donated to charity; she also worked
22extra jobs to bring her siblings and parents to America; she

1enjoyed drawing and cooking and was a fan of Julia Roberts; her
2greatest joy was her family, whom she served with love and
3care; she especially enjoyed spending time with her
4grandchildren; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh's loved ones have established a
6not-for-profit organization in Illinois, The Shobha
7Foundation, to honor her legacy in support of cancer research,
8women's rights, and education in the United States and abroad;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh was preceded in death by her parents;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Parikh is survived by her husband of 46 years,
13Deven Parikh; her children, Parul Cheriyan, Dr. Rupak Parikh,
14Parag Parikh, and Dr. Roshan Shah; her grandchildren, Riya and
15Sarina Cheriyan; her mother-in-law, Dhangauriben Parikh; her
16son-in-law, Thomas Cheriyan; her daughter-in-law, Nancy To;
17her siblings, Prabodh Shah, Dilip Shah, Dr. Pankaj Shah, and
18Nikunj Talati; her brother-in-law, Dr. Kiran Talati; her
19sisters-in-law, Bharati P. Shah, Hemangini Shah, and Jagruti
20Shah; and her extended family and friends; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Dr. Shobha Deven Parikh and extend our sincere condolences to
2her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Dr. Parikh as an expression of our
6deepest sympathy.
