HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Interstate 57 is a major thoroughfare that runs
3through the a large portion of the City of Chicago and the
4outlying suburbs, as well as through the State of Illinois,
5tracing the route of the former Illinois Central railroad line;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Tuskegee Airmen were dedicated, determined
8young men who enlisted to become America's first black military
9airmen; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Each of the men possessed a strong personal desire
11to serve the United States with the best of his ability; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After the end of World War II, black airmen
13returned to the United States and once again faced racism and
14hatred, despite their outstanding service record; and
 
15    WHEREAS, These brave men deserve to be recognized by the
16State of Illinois for their service to their country during
17wartime; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that the section of Interstate 57

1between Exit 339 at Sauk Trail Road, and Exit 353 at 127th
2Street and Burr Oak Avenue, be renamed the Tuskegee Airmen
3Memorial Highway; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
5is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
6State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
7giving notice of the name of the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial
8Highway; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
11Transportation.
