HOUSE RESOLUTION

2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate and thank Nora
4Power for her work with UNICEF and many other community
5organizations; and

6    WHEREAS, Nora Power's interest in UNICEF began when she saw
7a commercial about children in Africa who did not have enough
8to eat, proper medical attention, or the opportunity to go to
9school; after the commercial, she wondered why the kids could
10not go to school and why their parents did not feed them;
11inspired by her strong sense of right and wrong, she came up
12with the idea to ask the people she knew to donate one dollar
13toward changing a child's life forever; and

14    WHEREAS, Nora Power originally intended to raise $300, an
15amount that would support one child for a year; through her
16fundraising efforts and a speech that she gave to the entire
17school at morning announcements and during the students' lunch
18periods, as well as enlisting the help of the local PTA, Nora
19easily raised this amount; instead of being content with
20raising this amount, however, Nora decided to raise $900, which
21would support three children for a year; and

22    WHEREAS, With her new goal of $900 in mind, Nora Power took

5the children who need help; after beginning her campaign in the
6early spring of 2nd grade, she had raised $1,400 by the
7beginning of 3rd grade; and

8    WHEREAS, Emboldened and empowered by her experience with
9raising money for UNICEF, Nora Power now seeks to continue
10helping those in need; currently mulling her options, she has
11expressed an interest in wildlife projects in the Gulf of
12Mexico and the pandas of China; and

13    WHEREAS, Nora Power has served as an inspiration to many;
14following her example, some of the librarians at her local
15public library were inspired to go assist Nora in packing meals
16for Feed My Starving Children; she also inspired one of the

18of Bangladesh; and
