HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Alice
4Carter; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Alice Carter was born in Pearl, Mississippi; she
6moved to Chicago's West Side in 1950; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Alice Carter loved cooking soul food since she was
8a child growing up in the Deep South of Mississippi; in 1961,
9she brought her "down-home cooking" to Chicago when she landed
10a job at a local West Side neighborhood eatery; in 1972, she
11opened her first restaurant on 5638 West Chicago Avenue; in
121983, she opened Alice's Soul Food at Madison and Parkside in
13Chicago; in 1988, she moved back to the Chicago Avenue spot,
14remaining there until she relocated to Division and Pine in
152004; the restaurant once again returned to its Chicago Avenue
16location in early 2010; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Alice Carter was well regarded by her many
18customers for her attention to customer service and her warm
19and welcoming demeanor; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In addition to running her restaurant, Alice
21Carter also worked for the Chicago Transit Authority beginning

1in the 1970s; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Alice Carter was the loving mother of 7 children;
3her daughter, Jackie, and her son, Glenn, are the current
4managers of Alice's Soul Food; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of
8Alice Carter; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Alice Carter as an expression of our
11sympathy.
