HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Michael
4Johnson of Springfield on the occasion of his retirement as
5Executive Director of the Illinois Association of School Boards
6(IASB); and
 
7    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson graduated from Bushnell-Prairie
8City High School in 1970; he earned his bachelor's degree in
9mathematics, master's degree in education administration, and
10educational specialist degree from Western Illinois University
11and his doctorate of education from Illinois State University;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson began his tenure as the 5th
14executive director of IASB in September of 2000; as Executive
15Director, he ably led a staff of more than 53 employees, with
16offices in Springfield and Lombard and an annual operating
17budget of over $5 million; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Prior to his service at IASB, he taught
19mathematics and special education in Quincy schools from 1973
20to 1976 and was K-12 principal in Scott-Morgan Community Unit
21School District 2 in Bluffs from 1976 to 1977; from 1977 to
221982, he served as Principal of Southern High School in

1Stronghurst; in 1982, he became superintendent of Toluca
2Community Unit School District 2, where he served until 1991;
3during this period, he also served as superintendent of Wenona
4Community Unit School District 1 for one year; from 1991 to
52000, he served as superintendent of Evergreen Park Community
6High School District 231 in Cook County; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson serves on the Illinois School
8District Liquid Asset Fund Plus Board, the Workers'
9Compensation Self-Insurance Trust Board, the Illinois School
10District Agency Property Casualty Board, and the Illinois
11Energy Consortium (IEC) Board; he serves as chairman of the
12School Leaders Risk Management Association, a multi-state
13Board legal liability reinsurance pool; he is a member of the
14ISBE Testing and Accountability committee and served as a
15co-chair of the Governor's Education Transition Team; he is
16also a member of the International High School Committee and
17the National School Boards Association Executive Directors
18Liaison Committee; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson has worked with the Illinois State
20Board of Education on the Superintendent's Advisory Committee,
21and has been an active member of vocational monitoring teams,
22special education peer monitoring teams, quality assurance
23review teams, the Prairie State Exam Committee, and the Testing
24and Accountability Committee, among many other boards and

1committees; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson was the recipient of the Illinois
3Crime Commission Educator of the Year award in 1999; he also
4serves as President of the Rotary Club in Toluca and Evergreen
5Park and has been active in the United Methodist Church, Boy
6Scouts, Boy's Club, and girl's softball and volleyball; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson and his wife, Kim, were married on
8December 22, 1973; they have 3 children, Jason (Stefanie),
9Jennifer (Jamie), and Jacob, and 2 grandchildren, Samantha and
10Lincoln, with another grandchild on the way; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Michael Johnson has served as a model of hard
12work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of
13Illinois; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we congratulate Dr. Michael Johnson on the occasion of his
17retirement, thank him for his service to the people of this
18State, and wish him many happy and healthy retirement years;
19and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to Michael Johnson as a symbol of our esteem and
