SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles William Germain Sr. of Palos
4Hills, who passed away peacefully on September 21, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr. was born on March 31, 1915, in
6Oude Pekela, the Netherlands; he arrived with his family at
7Ellis Island, New York, on May 9, 1920; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr. went to work for Illinois Bell
9on April 1, 1930, at age 15; the law at the time required him to
10attend school one day per week until he turned 17; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr. attended a continuation
12school right on the premises at the headquarters of the
13Illinois Bell company; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr.'s love of learning meant that
15he attended Englewood High School 4 nights a week while he
16worked at Illinois Bell, steadily moving up the ranks from
17messenger to management; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Once he finished high school, Charles Germain Sr.
19earned his associate's degree from Wilson Junior College and a
20degree in business administration from Northwestern University

1in 1964, all the while working at Illinois Bell; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr.'s career path at Illinois Bell
3included installation/repair technician, frame technician,
4central office technician, equipment engineer, Personnel
5Assessment, and Labor Relations; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr. retired on April 1, 1980, with
7just one day's absence from his job in 50 years; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In 1945, Charles Germain Sr. earned a Vail
9honorable mention citation for saving the life of a customer
10who threatened suicide; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Charles Germain Sr. is survived by his wife of 72
12years, Geraldine C. Germain; his daughter, Arlene Kasper; his
13son-in-law, Edward Kasper; his son, Charles Germain Jr.; his
14daughter-in-law, Suzanne Germain; his grandchildren, Rene
15Germain McFadden, Deanna Rae McFadden (Chris Welch), Michael
16Charles Germain (Marcia), and Kristin Anne Engberg (Scott); and
17his great-grandchildren, Samantha Engberg, Charles Michael
18Germain, Ian Welch, and Ryan Welch; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Charles William Germain Sr., while at the same time celebrating

2friends; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family and friends of Charles William Germain
5Sr. with our sincere sympathies.
