SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Illinois State Senator Susan Garrett attended
3Lake Forest College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in
4political science; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett began her political career in
61998, when she was elected to serve as State Representative;
7after serving 2 terms in the House of Representatives, she was
8elected to serve as State Senator from the 29th Legislative
9District, representing the communities of Bannockburn,
10Deerfield, Des Plaines, Fort Sheridan, Glencoe, Glenview,
11Highland Park, Highwood, Knollwood, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest,
12Mount Prospect, Niles, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Prospect
13Heights, and Riverwoods; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett served on and led a number of
15committees during her career in the General Assembly, including
16the House Committees on Aging, Appropriation - General
17Services, Elementary and Secondary Education, Urban
18Revitalization, Consumer Protection (Vice-Chairperson),
19Election and Campaign Reform (Vice-Chairperson), and
20Transportation and Motor Vehicles, the Senate Committees on
21Commerce (Vice-Chairperson), Education, Public Health,
22Government Reform, Revenue (Vice-Chairperson), Revenue -
23Subcommittee on Property Taxes, Environment (Chairperson), and

1State Government & Veterans Affairs, and Committees of the
2Whole; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett was named Majority Caucus Whip for
4the 96th and 97th General Assemblies; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett has sponsored multiple
6initiatives that have provided a higher standard of living for
7Illinois residents, such as increasing funding for the
8Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan Act to allow more
9individuals to receive healthcare coverage for a longer period
10of time and fighting to guarantee that children with autism
11have insurance coverage for treatment and therapy; and
 
12    WHEREAS, A champion for those with special needs, Senator
13Garrett introduced legislation to help families with hearing
14and visually impaired children by calling for school districts
15to notify parents of local facilities that provide services for
16their children; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett introduced the State's "Do Not
18Flush" campaign, which prohibits healthcare facilities and
19their employees from discharging and disposing any unused
20medication in a public waterway collection system or a septic
21system; the initiative was presented after the Senate Public
22Health Committee discovered findings of the level of

1pharmaceuticals in water; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett is a community advocate, always
3making it a priority to be highly reachable to all of her
4constituents by having regular town hall meetings to hear
5directly from residents regarding issues that are important to
6them and developing legislation around ideas that come from
7these meetings; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett believes that government, as a
9whole, should be open and available to Illinois residents,
10which lead her to pass major legislative measures to increase
11government accountability and ethics in State government, as
12well as providing more transparency and accountability in State
13government through the Illinois Transparency and
14Accountability Portal, which supplies an internet portal that
15lists information about State employees and consultants, State
16expenditures, all revocations and suspensions of tax
17certificates and professional licenses, and all current State
18contracts; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Senator Garrett has received numerous awards
20recognizing her service to the people of Illinois, including
21the Abner Mikva Award, the Friends of Municipalities Award, the
22Family Services "Woman of the Year" Award, the Lung Health
23Champion Award, and the Outstanding Commitment to Health-Care

2    WHEREAS, The members of the Senate extend our best wishes
3to Senator Susan Garrett as she begins this next phase of her
4life and wish her well as she enjoys more time with her
5husband, Scott, and their family; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we thank Senator Susan
8Garrett for her years of service to the people of Illinois and
9her dedication as a member of the Illinois Senate and honor her
10with this resolution; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Senator Susan Garrett as a symbol of our gratitude
13and greatest hopes for her future endeavors.
