SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-699.14 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm license plates to any Illinois resident who has earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal from the United States Armed Forces. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-699.14 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-699.14 new)
7    Sec. 3-699.14. Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm
8license plates.
9    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in
10the form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may issue
11special registration plates designated as Operation Desert
12Shield/Desert Storm license plates to any Illinois resident who
13has earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal from the United
14States Armed Forces. The special plates issued under this
15Section may be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first
16division, motorcycles, or motor vehicles of the second division
17weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. Plates issued under this
18Section shall expire according to the staggered multi-year
19procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
20    (b) The design, color, and format of the plates shall be
21wholly within the discretion of the Secretary of State.
22Appropriate documentation, as determined by the Secretary, and
23the appropriate registration fee shall accompany the

1application. The Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow
2the plates to be issued as vanity plates or personalized in
3accordance with Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The plates are
4not required to designate "Land of Lincoln", as prescribed in
5subsection (b) of Section 3-412 of this Code. The Secretary
6shall, in his or her discretion, approve and prescribe stickers
7or decals as provided under Section 3-412.
 
8    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
9becoming law.
