HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Formally established by the Governors State
3University Board of Trustees in 1978, the Nathan Manilow
4Sculpture Park was named for Nathan Manilow, a visionary
5developer who, along with Carrol Sweet and Philip Klutznick,
6formed American Community Builders at the conclusion of World
7War II and planned and built the neighboring Village of Park
8Forest for returning GIs; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The history of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park
10predates Governors State University, in that sculptor Mark
11diSuvero spent the summers of 1968 and 1969 living and building
12sculptures on the land that was to become the university; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Set within the prairie landscape of Governors
14State University, the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park serves its
15constituency with distinctive educational outreach and
16original programming, encouraging an interdisciplinary
17understanding of sculpture and art in contemporary life; the
18Park offers 29 master works of sculpture for public viewing
19situated within 100-plus acres of prairie landscape on the
20campus of Governors State University; the permanent collection
21includes 24 pieces, with 5 additional works on long-term loan
22from the artists; highlights include several important
23landscape-based sculptures created by distinguished artists at

1the height of their creative powers, a group of works by major
2late-20th century American sculptors, and a number of works
3representing Chicago-based artists circa 1973 to 2010;
4sculptors from France and Mexico are also represented; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is supported by
6numerous volunteers and donors who believe in its mission and
7its primary goals of education, acquisition, and conservation;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, Governors State University's Nathan Manilow
10Sculpture Park provides the Chicagoland region with a premier
11presentation of large-scale contemporary sculpture; programs
12and events present the landscape and sculpture in new and
13unexpected ways that are both educational and inspiring;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
17SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that the Illinois Department of
18Transportation is requested to erect on Interstate 57 at Sauk
19Trail Road and the new interchange at Interstate 57 and
20Interstate 294, consistent with State and federal regulations,
21appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of Nathan Manilow
22Sculpture Park; and be it further

3Governors State University President Elaine Maimon.
