HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives and the Illinois State Senate are proud to
4honor the achievements and contributions, both academic and
5athletic, of those colleges and universities which are located
6in the State; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In its 2013 season, the Loyola University Chicago
8men's volleyball team won the Midwest Intercollegiate
9Volleyball Association Tournament title for the first time in
10the school's history; it made its first-ever appearance in the
11National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's
12Volleyball Championship, finished its season with a record of
1322 wins and 10 losses, and finished ranked ninth in the final
14American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II Coaches
15Poll; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In its 2014 season, the Loyola University Chicago
17men's volleyball team finished the regular season with 24 wins
18and one loss, winning the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball
19Association Tournament title for the second time, and making
20its second appearance in the NCAA Men's Volleyball
21Championship; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago hosted the 2014 NCAA

1Men's Volleyball Championship in the Gentile Arena at its Lake
2Shore Campus in May of 2014; and
 
3    WHEREAS, On May 1, 2014, the Loyola University Chicago's
4men's volleyball team head coach, Shane Davis, was named Coach
5of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and
6assistant coach Mark Hulse was named Assistant Coach of the
7Year; and
 
8    WHEREAS, On May 3, 2014, in front of a capacity crowd of
94,475 in the Gentile Arena, the Loyola University Chicago men's
10volleyball team defeated Stanford University with a 4-set win
11in the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship, earning the school
12its first ever men's volleyball championship title; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball
14team is the only men's volleyball team in the State to hold the
15title of NCAA Men's Volleyball Champions; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball
17team is only the fourth team to win the NCAA Men's Volleyball
18Championship on its own home court; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The NCAA men's volleyball championship title is
20the second NCAA team championship title in the history of
21Loyola University Chicago and the first since the men's

1basketball program captured the NCAA Men's Basketball
2Championship in 1963; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball
4team finished the 2014 season with a record of 29 wins and one
5loss, at one point winning 27 consecutive matches; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The American Volleyball Coaches Association
7Coaches poll ranked the Loyola University Chicago's men's
8volleyball team number one in the country in 2014; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The 2014 Loyola University Chicago's men's
10volleyball team featured 4 All-Americans, including the NCAA
11Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Cody Caldwell, and the 2014
12Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the
13Year, Thomas Jaeschke, of Wheaton; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
16SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we honor and congratulate all of
17the players and coaches of the Loyola University Chicago's 2014
18NCAA men's volleyball championship team for their
19achievements, for bringing honor to the citizens of the State,
20and for inspiring all high school and collegiate athletics and
21athletic teams in the State in the pursuit of excellence; and
22be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this joint resolution
2shall be presented to Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., President of
3Loyola University Chicago, on behalf of the Loyola University
4Chicago 2014 men's volleyball team, as a symbol of our respect
5and esteem.
