HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, 1 in 150 children in the United States are born
3with congenital cytomegalovirus; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus is the most common
5cause of birth defects and childhood disabilities in the United
6States; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus is preventable with
8behavioral interventions, such as practicing frequent hand
9washing with soap and water after contact with diapers or oral
10secretions, not kissing young children on the mouth, and not
11sharing food, towels, or utensils with young children; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Cytomegalovirus is found in bodily fluids, such as
13saliva, blood, urine, and tears; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Congenital cytomegalovirus can be diagnosed if
15the virus is found in saliva, blood, or other body tissues of
16an infant during the first week after birth; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Most people are not aware of their cytomegalovirus
18infection status, with pregnant women being one of the highest
19risk groups; and

1    WHEREAS, The American College of Obstetricians and
2Gynecologists and the Centers for Disease Control and
3Prevention recommend that OB/GYNs counsel women on basic
4prevention measures to guard against cytomegalovirus
5infection; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The incidence of children born with congenital
7cytomegalovirus can be greatly reduced with public education
8and awareness; and
 
9    WHEREAS, A comprehensive understanding of cytomegalovirus
10provides opportunities to improve the health and well-being of
11our children; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we designate the month of June 2014 as Illinois Cytomegalovirus
15Awareness Month in the State of Illinois in order to raise
16awareness of the dangers of cytomegalovirus and reduce the
17occurrence of congenital cytomegalovirus infection; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That we recommend that more effort be taken to
20counsel women of childbearing age of the effect this virus can
21have on their children.
