HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Leroy
4Thomas Harris of Chicago; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Leroy Harris was born in Chicago on July 9, 1945
6to Melvina Rita Thompson and Leroy Harris; he graduated from
7Hyde Park High School (now Hyde Park Academy) in the spring of
81965 and enlisted in the United States Army in August; he was
9stationed in Vietnam, where he saw combat and served as a
10military police officer; he earned the National Defense Service
11Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal,
12and the Good Conduct Medal; while in the service, he also
13performed as part of a dance troupe to entertain the troops;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Leroy Harris worked for the Washington, D.C.
16Metropolitan Police Department for over 24 years; he started
17out on foot patrol and retired as a Homicide Detective
18Sergeant; he also worked as a real estate broker, selling homes
19to mayors, local politicians, police officers, friends, and
20family; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Leroy Harris relocated to Chicago in 1992 and
22married his high school sweetheart, Marcia; he retired from the

1Cook County State's Attorney's Office; he also worked as a real
2estate broker with Coldwell Banker; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Leroy Harris was well-known for his barbeque,
4spaghetti with neck bones, crab cakes, and gumbo and loved to
5dance; for many years he served as a Trustee at New Christian
6Valley Full Gospel Baptist Church in South Holland; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Leroy Harris is survived by his wife, Marcia; his
8mother, Melvina Rita Storrs; 3 daughters, Kimberly Fulks
9(William), Kelli Harris, and Salli Whitfield (Dondre); 2 sons,
10Kevin Harris and Naland Best (Sharice); one brother, Harold
11Wymbs (Cassandra); 4 sisters, Lada Harland (Shawn), Shirley
12James (Clarence), Wylette Collins, and Patricia McAfee; 10
13grandchildren, Stacey, Kevin Michael, Kayla, Camille, Alonzo,
14Kaleb, Parker, Damarion, Dre, and Zaland; 2 aunts, Clara Lee
15and Ora Belle Wilson; 2 godchildren, Julian and Kelsie Bowers;
16and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends;
17therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we mourn the passing of Leroy Thomas Harris, and extend our
21sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
22and loved him; and be it further
