AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1680

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 1680 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political
5Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows:
 
6    (50 ILCS 135/12)
7    Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office.
8    (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection
9district may:
10        (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve
11    in that public office if elected;
12        (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that
13    public office if appointed; and
14        (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on
15    duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters
16    for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

1    (b) A firefighter, police officer, or Sheriff's deputy may
2be a candidate for or appointed to serve in the Illinois
3General Assembly. A firefighter, police officer, or Sheriff's
4deputy who is elected to the Illinois General Assembly shall,
5upon written application to the employer, be granted a leave of
6absence without compensation during his or her term of office.
7As long as the firefighter, police officer, or Sheriff's deputy
8is not in uniform and not on duty, he or she may solicit votes
9and campaign funds and challenge voters for the General
10Assembly office for which he or she is a candidate.
11    This subsection (b) shall not be deemed to authorize
12conduct prohibited by the federal Hatch Act by employees
13subject to that Act.

15    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
16becoming law.".
