AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1680

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 1680 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political
5Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows:
 
6    (50 ILCS 135/12)
7    Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office.
8    (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection
9district may:
10        (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve
11    in that public office if elected;
12        (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that
13    public office if appointed; and
14        (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on
15    duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters
16    for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

1    (b) A firefighter who is elected to the Illinois General
2Assembly shall, upon written application to the employer, be
3granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or
4her term of office.
5    (c) A police officer or Sheriff's deputy may be a candidate
6for or appointed to serve in, and if elected or appointed serve
7in, the Illinois General Assembly. A police officer or
8Sheriff's deputy who is elected to the General Assembly shall,
9upon written application to the employer, be granted a leave of
10absence without compensation during his or her term of office.
11As long as the police officer or Sheriff's deputy is not in
12uniform and not on duty, he or she may solicit votes and
13campaign funds and challenge voters for the General Assembly
14office for which he or she is a candidate.
