SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Shirley Mae Jackson-Higgins, who passed
4away on May 24, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins was born in Bell City,
6Missouri on February 3, 1943 to Willie J. and Rosie Lee
7Jackson; she attended South Mast School and graduated from Bell
8City High School; she was a member of Missionary Baptist Church
9in Bell City; she attended Southeast Missouri State University
10in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and graduated from Triton College
11in River Grove; she also attended DePaul University; after
12relocating to Maywood, she was a member of First Baptist Church
13of Melrose Park; she married Albert on December 31, 1968; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins's work history is long
15and diverse beginning at Miles Square Medical Center of
16Chicago; after relocating to Maywood, she took the position of
17Account Administrator at Allied Van Lines; she also served as
18an assistant to the Illinois State Senate; later, she was
19employed by the Cook County Board of Commissioners; upon
20retirement, she served as Commissioner on the Maywood Housing
21Authority Board of Directors and was a member of The Way Back
22Inn Organization of Maywood Board of Directors; her most recent
23position was that of Director of the Maywood Urban

1Revitalization Corporation; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins acquired numerous
3professional developmental certificates and accolades,
4including the Operation Uplift Maywood Hometown Achievement
5Award, the Rosa Parks Heritage Award, and membership in the
6Northeastern University Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins was preceded in death by
9her parents; 2 brothers, Freddie Lee and J.W.; and 5 sisters,
10Barbara Jean, Jessie B., Virginia, Ruthie Jean, and Deborah
11Ann; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins is survived by her loving
13husband, Albert; beloved sons, Talbert and Gerald; precious
14daughters, Angela Shirlene and Verna; beautiful grandchildren,
15Sydney Raymond and Taylor Gabrielle Rose; siblings, Willie Lee
16(Helen), Eddie Lee, Jerlean LeSure (Charles, deceased),
17Earnestine Pullen (Charles, deceased), Carl Lee (Loretta),
18Daniel Lee (Amelia), and Ceretha Brown (James, deceased);
19brother-in-law, J.W. Terry; and a host of nieces, nephews,
20other relatives, and friends; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Shirley Mae Jackson-Higgins, and extend our sincere
2condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
3her; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
