HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Hearl
4Bishop of Canton; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop was born in Karnak, a small town in
6Southern Illinois, on December 24, 1920; he attended Southern
7Illinois University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and
8master's degree in education; he married Helen Ilene Dickey in
91946; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop was the agriculture teacher at
11Eldorado High School from 1946 to 1961; he was then hired as
12the Assistant Principal at Ridgeway High School for 2 years; he
13moved his family north and continued his work in education
14administration as principal of Mahomet-Seymour High School
15from 1963 to 1966; while working in the school district, he
16worked on his doctorate in business administration at the
17University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1966, Hearl Bishop's career brought him to
19Canton, Illinois, as he was hired as the Dean of Canton
20Community College (CCC); he, along with Dr. William Taylor and
21Harold Swartzbaugh and the many supporters who worked
22tirelessly for 2 years, successfully passed a referendum to

1elevate CCC to Class I Junior College status in 1968; the
2college would become known as Spoon River College;
3groundbreaking began in 1972 for the new campus on the
4outskirts of Canton, and he was named the first President
5Emeritus, continuing his work until his retirement in 1978; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop's dedication to higher education
7helped inspire the college to continue to grow with the
8addition of 3 satellite campuses in Macomb, Rushville, and
9Havana after his retirement; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop enjoyed his days golfing with friends
11and challenging rounds with his sons; they enjoyed fishing
12locally and trips out west, which proved to be adventurous; he
13also enjoyed playing billiards at the Canton Senior Center; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop lived his life to the fullest; he was
15a pillar in the Canton community and a source of love and
16strength to his family and an advocate for the education and
17advancement of agriculture in Illinois; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop was preceded in death by his wife,
19Helen; his mother, Minnie; his father, Luther; and his sister,
20Margaree (Bishop) Hunter; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Hearl Bishop is survived by his sons, Dan Bishop

1(Connie Huttes Bishop) and Jack Bishop (Karla Hatcher Bishop);
2his daughter, Beth Chapman (Philip Chapman); his
3grandchildren, Amy Deakin, Emily Deakin Harmony (Faron
4Harmony), Jennifer Bishop (Justin Hood), Katie Bishop, Matt
5Chapman (Amy J. Chapman), and Nikki Chapman; his
6great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Deakin, Dustin, Jadlyn, Victoria,
7and Faron Harmony, Parker and Maggie Chapman, and Hunter Hood;
8his 2 brothers, Bill and Bruce Bishop; and his sister, Louise
9(Bishop) Eastwood; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12mourn the passing of Hearl Bishop, and extend our sincere
13condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
14him; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Hearl Bishop as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
