SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Daniel James "Dan" Maher of Joliet, who passed away on January 27, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Dan Maher was born to James "Shammy" and Rose (Likovic) Maher on March 27, 1930; he was raised in Lockport alongside his brother, Joseph (Della) and sister, Virginia (John) Feldmann; he attended Fairmont Grade School, Lockport Township High School and St. Ambrose University; he served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and was a Bronze Star recipient; and

WHEREAS, Dan Maher worked as a Certified Public Accountant in Joliet for 37 years; he was elected Will County Auditor in 1992 and again in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Dan Maher sat on the board of many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, United Cerebral Palsy, the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, the Crisis Line, the Spanish Center, and the Irish-American Society of County Will; he was a member of the Illinois and Will County Conference on Religion and Race in the 1960s; he also served on the school boards of St. Patrick's and Joliet Public Grade School during the period of integration; a lifelong Democrat, he coordinated campaigns in Will County for many, including John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy; and

WHEREAS, In 2014, Dan Maher received the Will County Democratic Party Lifetime Achievement Award; he was also recognized for his bravery, determination, and patriotism on an Honor Flight in 2017; he saw the best in everyone and never spoke an unkind word; and

WHEREAS, Dan Maher was the devoted husband of Mary Catherine (Cahill) for 65 years, the loving father of Teresa, Patrick (Donna), John (Dina), James (Ann), Kathleen (Thomas), Kenny, Christine (Patrick Mackey), David, and great friend Laurita "Muff" Lukas, the loving grandfather of Michael, Annmarie (Anton) Pilipenko, Joseph (Mandy), Brian (Emily), Kevin (Lauren), Thomas (Lisa), Margaret (William), Nora, Hannah, Rosemary, Jack (Hannah), Paige (Brett), Brooke (Nick), Danielle, Daniel, Mac, Maxwell, Benjamin, Cameron, and Gianna, the adoring great-grandfather of Eliana and Adelyn, and the loving uncle of 22 nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Daniel James "Dan" Maher and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dan Maher as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
