SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Woodrow George "Woody" Shadid of Normal, who passed away on April 20, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Woody Shadid was born in Bloomington to George and Nellie Samara Shadid on December 27, 1921; when he was a junior at Bloomington High School in 1933, he began delivering newspapers for the Pantagraph; after high school graduation, he became the full-time office boy and then the city circulation bookkeeper; he joined the United States Navy, where he was a chief petty officer on the U.S.S. LCI #1073 during World War II; and

WHEREAS, After returning from the Navy, Woody Shadid continued his career at the Pantagraph and worked as the assistant city circulation manager; by 1959, he was the national advertising manager; his next role was the director of advertising; in 1984, he was named the president of the International Advertising and Marketing Executives, an honor that usually goes to someone from a large city; he later used his marketing skills as the newspaper's "ambassador" and finally retired in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Woody Shadid served on many boards and committees, often with his wife Jane, including the Alzheimer's Association, the American Red Cross of the Heartland, the Community Health Care Clinic, Family Services of McLean County, the Miller Park Zoo, and the United Way; his work with the Humane Society of Central Illinois had special meaning because of the love he had for his own dogs; he was a member of the Bloomington/Normal Sunrise Rotary Club and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow; he was inducted into the Bloomington High School Hall of Fame; he will be remembered as a snappy dresser, the Ambassador of Friendship, and the pre-eminent Community Volunteer and Fundraiser; and

WHEREAS, Woody Shadid was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, William Shadid, Vicky Abdnour, and Madalyn Beasley; his sister, Dorothy Lyons, currently lives in Bloomington; and

WHEREAS, Woody Shadid married his first wife, Gertrude Ellen Whitenack, in 1942, and they had two sons, William (Jean) and Stephen (Marg); she preceded him in death in 1990; he married Jane Delgado in 1991, and she brought four daughters to their blended family, Terri (Craig), Sue, Debbie, and Leslie (Brad); they shared grandchildren, Bonnie, Andrew, Stephanie, Christina, Elena, Anthony, Alecia, Angela, Alex, and Shelby, and several great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Woodrow George "Woody" Shadid and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Woody Shadid as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
