SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Woodrow George "Woody" Shadid of Normal,
4who passed away on April 20, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Woody Shadid was born in Bloomington to George and
6Nellie Samara Shadid on December 27, 1921; when he was a junior
7at Bloomington High School in 1933, he began delivering
8newspapers for the Pantagraph; after high school graduation, he
9became the full-time office boy and then the city circulation
10bookkeeper; he joined the United States Navy, where he was a
11chief petty officer on the U.S.S. LCI #1073 during World War
12II; and
 
13    WHEREAS, After returning from the Navy, Woody Shadid
14continued his career at the Pantagraph and worked as the
15assistant city circulation manager; by 1959, he was the
16national advertising manager; his next role was the director of
17advertising; in 1984, he was named the president of the
18International Advertising and Marketing Executives, an honor
19that usually goes to someone from a large city; he later used
20his marketing skills as the newspaper's "ambassador" and
21finally retired in 2007; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Woody Shadid served on many boards and committees,

1often with his wife Jane, including the Alzheimer's
2Association, the American Red Cross of the Heartland, the
3Community Health Care Clinic, Family Services of McLean County,
4the Miller Park Zoo, and the United Way; his work with the
5Humane Society of Central Illinois had special meaning because
6of the love he had for his own dogs; he was a member of the
7Bloomington/Normal Sunrise Rotary Club and was recognized as a
8Paul Harris Fellow; he was inducted into the Bloomington High
9School Hall of Fame; he will be remembered as a snappy dresser,
10the Ambassador of Friendship, and the pre-eminent Community
11Volunteer and Fundraiser; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Woody Shadid was preceded in death by his parents
13and his siblings, William Shadid, Vicky Abdnour, and Madalyn
14Beasley; his sister, Dorothy Lyons, currently lives in
15Bloomington; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Woody Shadid married his first wife, Gertrude
17Ellen Whitenack, in 1942, and they had two sons, William (Jean)
18and Stephen (Marg); she preceded him in death in 1990; he
19married Jane Delgado in 1991, and she brought four daughters to
20their blended family, Terri (Craig), Sue, Debbie, and Leslie
21(Brad); they shared grandchildren, Bonnie, Andrew, Stephanie,
22Christina, Elena, Anthony, Alecia, Angela, Alex, and Shelby,
23and several great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Woodrow George "Woody" Shadid and extend our sincere
4condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
5him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Woody Shadid as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
