SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Gloria Anne Kittell Hannas on December
418, 2018 at the age of 91; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas was born on May 22, 1927 in Newark,
6New Jersey to Noel E. and Virgiline Kittell; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas graduated from Woodbridge High
8School and attended Indiana University, where she graduated
9with a B.A. in 1949; she worked for J. Walter Thompson and
10earned her M.A. at Northwestern University in 1972; she earned
11a teacher's certificate and began a 20-year career as a high
12school French teacher at Riverside Brookfield High School,
13Thornton Township, and later Thornwood High School; during her
14retirement, she became a private French consultant and tutor
15for students and for adults going abroad; she was also a
16passionate volunteer advocate for people she felt were in need
17of support and freedom; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1950, Gloria Hannas married Warren F. Hannas
19and lived in La Grange for 60 years; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas served as a commissioner from First
21Presbyterian Church of La Grange at the meetings of the Chicago

1Presbytery; she worked with the Chicago Presbytery's Middle
2East Task Force and Peacemaking Mission Team and advocated for
3justice in Central and South America; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas was a progressive who spoke out for
5social justice and world peace and was greatly admired for her
6dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to work for peace and
7justice; she received a Humanitarian Award from the La Grange
8NAACP; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas moved to Oak Park to an apartment in
10the Oak Park Arms in 2010 to live in a community where
11integrated housing was desired and where people practiced
12inclusion; she was active with the Oak Park Arms' Readers
13Theater and its book club; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas became an active member of First
15United Church of Oak Park, where she attended Sunday morning
16adult education seminars and weekly Bible studies on a variety
17of topics; she was on the church's Faith in Action Committee;
18in addition, she tutored elementary children as part of her
19church's Cluster tutoring program for inner city youth; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Once she needed assistance, Gloria Hannas moved to
21Overland Park, Kansas to be near family in 2017; she faithfully
22attended Village Presbyterian Church as long as she was able;

2    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas loved cats her entire life and had
3the pleasure of having two snowshoe cats, Lili and Sasha most
4recently, and Minou before them; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gloria Hannas is survived by her children, Barbara
6(Hannas) Johnson and Stuart Hannas; her grandchildren, Sarah
7Payne and Chris Payne; her great-grandchildren; her niece,
8Cindy (Hannas) D'Esterre; and her nephews, Scott Hannas, Steve
9Hannas, and Craig Hannas; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Gloria Anne Kittell Hannas and extend our sincere condolences
13to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
14it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Gloria Hannas as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
