SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles "Norman" Brown Jr. of Normal, who
4passed away on December 10, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Norman Brown was born in Ames, Iowa to Verna
6Eunice Hughes and Charles Norman Brown Sr. on January 2, 1930;
7he graduated from Ames High School in 1947, where he served as
8class president and participated in athletics; he graduated
9from Iowa State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science
10and in 1953 with a Master of Science in Agronomy; he was tapped
11for the Cardinal Key, the highest honor for men, and served as
12president of the University YMCA and Delta Upsilon Fraternity;
13he sang in numerous quartets and choirs; he married Ruth K.L.
14Andersen in 1952; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Following four years of ROTC, Norman Brown was
16inducted into the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant in
171953, where he completed pilot flight training; he was a
18veteran of the Cold War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War,
19retiring as lieutenant colonel and command pilot in 1973; he
20lived in 10 states and four overseas countries and visited many
21others; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Norman Brown flew corporate aircraft for the

1General Telephone Co. (Verizon) from the Bloomington airport
2for 15 years; his piloting career consisted of approximately
313,000 flights in aircraft from the little yellow Piper Cub to
4the eight engine B-52 bomber; his photo with a GTE Beech
5airplane was on the cover of Professional Pilot Magazine in
61987; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Norman Brown worked for decades with his family in
8real estate and farming; he was a longtime member of Calvary
9United Methodist Church in Normal, serving in various
10capacities; he also participated in the Ecumenical Walk to
11Emmaus/Great Banquet, including its prison ministries; he was a
12longtime member of Illinois State University Senior
13Professionals and the College Alumni Club, where he served as
14president; he sang in the choir for the Bloomington American
15Passion Play for 15 years; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Norman Brown married Carolyn Lee Kuhlman in 2002;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, Norman Brown enjoyed time with family and friends,
19farming, hunting, aviation, motor vehicles, music, Christian
20ministries, travel, and reading; he especially liked motorized
21machines and kept several antique vehicles running; he restored
22and maintained the home, buildings, and grounds on the
23farmstead where his family has lived since 1986; he graciously

1shared the farmstead with other individuals and groups,
2including for weddings and picnics; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Norman Brown was preceded in death by his wife of
444 years, Ruth; his parents; his sister, Elsie Huber; his
5brother, Wayne Brown; and his son-in-law, Bill Shewman; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Norman Brown is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his
7brother, Keith Brown; his children, Tannia Shewman, Laurine
8Brown, Blaine (Susan) Brown, and Clinton (Debbie) Brown; his
9grandchildren, Nada (Jeremy) Stahmer, Melea (Spencer) Tejedas,
10Dane (Jasmine) Shewman, Shelby (Isaac) Heath, Preston,
11Cheylane, Alia, and Rianne Brown, and Ian, Bryce, Evan, and
12Brynn Kuhlman; his great-grandchildren, Ruthie, Zac, Liam, and
13Landon Stahmer, Anistyn and Levi Heath, and Ayla Shewman; and
14his stepsons, Robert (Melissa) and Charles Kuhlman; therefore,
15be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Charles "Norman" Brown Jr. and extend our sincere condolences
19to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
20it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Norman Brown as an expression of our
