SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Martin J. "Marty" Gleason, who passed
4away on October 1, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marty Gleason was an active participant in
6Illinois Democratic politics for more than five decades; a 1955
7graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he served as the
8Precinct Committeeman for Precinct 35 in Burr Ridge and, until
9his death, was an active volunteer for Bill Foster; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Marty Gleason served on the delegation to the
11Democratic National Committee in 1964 and again in 1972; he
12also served as State Central Committeeman and actively
13supported the Senate's campaigns for Adlai Stevenson, Paul
14Douglas, and Paul Simon; in addition to serving in these roles,
15he also ran for State Senate and for Congress; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 1968, Marty Gleason served as the Deputy Floor
17Manager for Eugene McCarthy at the Democratic National
18Convention in Chicago; a 2008 article for the Daily Herald
19noted, "with convention experiences running the gamut from
20rubbing shoulders with celebrities Paul Newman and Joanne
21Woodward to bailing McCarthy volunteers out of jail at one in
22the morning, Gleason summed it up as 'like rolling over Niagara

1Falls in a barrel'"; in Arthur Herzog III's book on the
2McCarthy campaign, Gleason recounted that Stephen A. Mitchell
3drafted him for the role because he had the reputation of being
4a "political alley fighter"; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marty Gleason was a true pioneer for the
6Democratic Party; he was at the forefront of many changes in
7the political landscape in DuPage and Will Counties, as well as
8the State of Illinois; he was always willing to accept the
9challenges that needed his energy and experience and worked for
10the good of the cause; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Marty Gleason was the husband of Nancy Sweeney
12(Voris) Gleason, the father of Lisa (Jim) Sattler and Cara
13Guzman, the stepfather of John Sweeney, Colleen (Warren)
14Jablonsky, Kevin (Shawn) Sweeney, Tim (Tracy) Sweeney, and
15Peter Sweeney, the grandfather of 16, and the great-grandfather
16of 12; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Martin J. "Marty" Gleason and extend our sincere condolences to
20his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

2our deepest sympathy.
