SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Robert C. Whitehead Jr. of North Chicago,
4who passed away on March 4, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born in 1931 in Marion, Alabama to Robert
6and Mattie Whitehead; Robert's parents moved to the Waukegan
7area in July 1937; he attended elementary schools in the
8Waukegan-North Chicago area; he graduated from Waukegan
9Township High School in June of 1949 and received a B. A.
10Degree from Central State University at Wilberforce, Ohio in
11June 1953 with a major in Political Science-History and a minor
12in Music Education; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Central State University he
14received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States
15Army and served two years with the 82nd Airborne Division as a
16paratrooper-ranger; upon the completion of his military
17obligation he worked as a Postal Clerk for six and one half
18years at the North Chicago Post Office; and
 
19    WHEREAS, While working at the Post Office, he completed one
20year of law school at Chicago Kent College of Law; he earned a
21M.Ed Degree in Education at Roosevelt University with emphasis
22on Supervision and School Administration and went on to work 28

1years with the North Chicago school system with 22 of the years
2as a School Principal and retired in 1990; he was the first
3black Junior High School Principal in Lake County; and
 
4    WHEREAS, He held the following memberships: Silver Square
5Lodge #791 Fayetteville, North Carolina Demit to; Rufus
6Mitchell Lodge #107 (Past Treasurer); Western Consistory #28
7(1965) Demit to; North Shore Consistory #91 (Most Wise &
8Perfect Master); Shawall Temple #165 A.E.A.O.N.M.S.
9Illustrious Potentate; 33rd Degree Mason; Emblem Chapter #140
10O.E.S. Past Patron; Stanley J Harris #60 Holy Royal Arch Mason;
11Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, life member; Shiloh Baptist Church,
12member for 47 years and a trustee 35 years; Past Board
13Member-Lake County Urban League; Past Board Member-Branch
14Y.M.C.A.; Past 2nd Vice-President, Illinois Lung Association;
15Past President-Lake County Lung Association; and the American
16Legion; and
 
17    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; his
18brothers, Timothy and Kenneth; and his sister, Mallie Nichols;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, Robert Whitehead Jr. is survived by his loving
21wife, Valda; his son, Robert Rick (Shari); his granddaughter,
22Michelle Cydney; his step-grandsons, Philip, Adam, and Connor;
23his sisters, Cleopatra Cowins and Jacqueline Dorsey; his

1brother, Lawrence (Laura); his brother-in-law, Harvey (Helen)
2Ricks; his sisters-in-law, Kaye Whitehead and Barbara Ricks;
3his uncles, Rev. John (Ruby) Whitehead and Elder Earl (Laverne)
4Whitehead; his aunts, Elma McKinney and Archie Russell; several
5nieces and nephews; and special friends Warren and Mert
6Johnson, Curtis and Kathy Morris, O'Niel Swanson, and his
7Shiloh Baptist Church and Masonic family; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
10his family and friends, the passing of Robert C. Whitehead Jr.;
11and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Robert C. Whitehead Jr. as a symbol
14of our sincere sympathy.
