SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Elmer Lynn Hauldren; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Lynn Hauldren was born in St. Louis, Missouri on
5April 1, 1922; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lynn Hauldren served in the United States Army
7during World War II; during that time, he served in Calcutta,
8India for four years and once drove supplies to a blockaded
9China; he met his future wife, Helen Helmke, in Des Moines,
10Iowa, while stationed there; the couple was married in
11Sacramento, California in 1943; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After his stint in the military, Lynn Hauldren
13studied journalism at Northwestern University; he then went to
14work as an advertising copywriter in Chicago, New Orleans, and
15Los Angeles before settling in the Chicago area; during his
16career, he became a creative director at three top agencies and
17earned two Clio Awards; he eventually started his own
18advertising firm, where he made advertisements for Matt's
19Cookies, Homemakers, and Empire Carpet; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Lynn Hauldren was best known for appearing in
21numerous commercials as his on-screen alter ego, the Empire

1Carpet Man; in addition to appearing as the Empire Carpet Man,
2he also recorded the Empire jingle with his then-group, The
3Fabulous 40s, and sang multiple parts of the harmonized phone
4number; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lynn Hauldren sang baritone in numerous
6barbershop quartets; he was also an accomplished singer who
7recorded two albums and performed in 49 of 50 states and in
8Europe with his barbershop quartet, Chordiac Arrest; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lynn Hauldren was an avid White Sox and Bears fan
10who once threw out the first pitch at a Cubs game; he was a
11boating fanatic who had a powerboat at Burnham Harbor; every
12boat he owned had clever musical-themed names, including his
13favorite, "Sea Sharp"; he also took up skiing at the age of 60;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Lynn Hauldren is survived by his six children; his
1615 grandchildren; and his 10 great-grandchildren; therefore,
17be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
20his family and friends, the passing of Elmer Lynn Hauldren; and
21be it further

2presented to the family of Lynn Hauldren as an expression of
3our sympathy.
