SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a complex
3neurological motor-planning disorder often accompanied by
4other special needs and is among the most severe of speech and
5communication problems; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Children affected by CAS have extreme difficulty
7planning and producing the precise, highly refined, and
8specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw, and
9palate that are necessary in producing clear, intelligible
10speech; and
 
11    WHEREAS, While the act of learning to speak comes
12effortlessly to most children, those with apraxia require years
13of intensive speech therapy and have lengthy struggles to
14communicate; although not life-threatening, the disorder is
15life-altering, as families are left to cope with the emotional,
16physical, and financial challenges of having a child diagnosed
17with CAS; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Apraxia Connection and Silent Stars
19Foundation, along with the national organization Childhood
20Apraxia of Speech of North America, are part of a local, state,
21and national effort to bring awareness of this disorder;
22therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate May 14,
32013 as Apraxia Awareness Day in the State of Illinois; and be
4it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to The Apraxia Connection as a symbol of our esteem
7and respect for its work.
