HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Arvile
4"Vera" Miles of Chicago, who passed away on January 18, 2020;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Vera Miles was born in West Helena, Arkansas to
7Angie Hampton-Marshall and Billy Johnson on August 22, 1959;
8she graduated from Wendell Phillips High School in 1978; she
9attended nursing school at Automation Academy in 1983 and
10graduated as a Certified Nursing Assistant; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Vera Miles worked at Warren Barr Gold Coast Living
12and Rehabilitation Center as a CNA; she also traveled the U.S.
13as a salesperson; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Vera Miles had a passion for helping people; she
15was involved in several organizations and committees,
16including the Chicago Housing Authority Tenant Patrol, the
17Stateway Gardens Local Advisory Council, Mayor Daley's
18Participant Advisory Council, the Stateway/Park Boulevard
19Working Group, the Third Ward Tax Increment Financing
20Committee, the Lugenia Burns Hope Center, the Legal Assistance
21Foundation Board, the Pace ADA Committee Board, and the Chicago
22Transit Authority ADA Committee Board; she held several

1leadership roles, including serving as the CHA Relocation Coach
2Supervisor in 2001 and as the president of the senior group she
3helped create in Park Boulevard; she has also received numerous
4awards; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Vera Miles played a pivotal role in putting
6Stateway Gardens back on the map; she, along with the
7Washington Park Local Advisory Committee President Francine
8Washington, spoke with John Roberson from Mayor Daley's office
9in 1998; they advocated for Stateway Gardens as a prime
10real-estate area, showcasing its access to major transit and
11other area amenities; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Vera Miles was committed to her faith from an
13early age and was a dedicated member of the New Mt. Moriah
14Baptist Church; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Vera Miles was preceded in death by her parents;
16her sister, Gertrude Bailey; and her brother, Ellis Miles; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Vera Miles is survived by her sons, Jernois
18Johnson, Michael Miles, Dennis Wright Jr., and Deniro Miles;
19her godchildren, Tamika Griffin and Keon Gatewood; her
20stepmother, Jewel Lee Johnson; her sisters Lee "Cookie"
21Summers, Everlean Banks, Linda Thomas, and Sheila Johnson; her
22brother-in-law, Broderick Sephus; her God Sister, Patricia

1Delaney; her brothers, Larnzell Robinson, Robert Johnson, and
2Kerie Hampton; her favorite aunts, Pearl L. Hampton and
3Savannah Meeks; and her grandchildren, nieces, nephews,
4cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we mourn the passing of Arvile "Vera" Miles and extend our
8sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
9and loved her; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Vera Miles as an expression of our
12deepest sympathy.
