| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of John Robert Lawrence of Bloomington, who | 4 | | passed away on October 8, 2020; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, John Lawrence was born in Rockford to Robert A. | 6 | | and Olive Safford Lawrence on May 24, 1932; he graduated from | 7 | | West High School in Rockford in 1950; he received a Bachelor of | 8 | | Arts from Knox College in Galesburg in 1954 with a commission | 9 | | as a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry U.S. Army; he married Winifred | 10 | | Gillen at the historic Old Main at Knox College on September | 11 | | 24, 1954; after training at Ft. Benning, he was stationed in | 12 | | Germany with the 9th Infantry Division, Army of Occupation; he | 13 | | also served with the 1st, 8th, and 10th Infantry Divisions in | 14 | | command staff and communications assignments; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, John Lawrence left the military in 1962, and he | 16 | | joined the Admissions Office of MacMurray College in | 17 | | Jacksonville; he returned to Knox College and served as the | 18 | | Associate Director of Admissions for 12 years; he then became | 19 | | Assistant to the Dean of a medical division of New York | 20 | | University; later, he went into business as a business forms | 21 | | designer; he was appointed as an instructor in the Department | 22 | | of Dietetics at Western Illinois University and had great fun | 23 | | with non-credit courses in which he and many local cooks taught |

| 1 | | each other; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, John Lawrence and Winifred retired to Colchester, | 3 | | where they became frequent visitors at Damones Restaurant, | 4 | | owned at that time by his son, Bill, and his wife, Jan; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, John Lawrence was active in the Kiwanis Club in | 6 | | Normal and with Senior Professionals at Illinois State | 7 | | University; he was also an active member of the Strategy and | 8 | | Planning Council, Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois | 9 | | State University; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, John Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, | 11 | | Winifred; his parents; and his sisters, Mary and Roberta; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, John Lawrence is survived by his sister, Ruth | 13 | | Ives; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert F. "Bob" and Ellen | 14 | | Lawrence, and their children, Christopher, Bobby, Katy, and | 15 | | Tom; his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and David Beveridge, and | 16 | | their daughters, Wendy and Gail; his son and daughter-in-law, | 17 | | Bill and Jan Lawrence, and their children, John, Kate, and | 18 | | Kristen; and 13 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
