HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The United States Navy has a proud tradition of
3service dating back to the Revolutionary War, when the
4Continental Congress created the Continental Navy to fight on
5the seas for our nation's independence; following the
6dissolution of the Continental Navy, the Founding Fathers gave
7Congress the right to create a navy through the United States
8Constitution, which culminated in the creation of the Naval Act
9of 1794 and the launching of the first United States warships
10in 1797; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The United States Navy has been deployed in all of
12the United States' great conflicts, fighting for our nation
13during the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War
14II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm,
15and the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The United States Navy also performs humanitarian
17missions throughout the world, helping those in need without
18pride or prejudice; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The United States Navy is known throughout the
20world for its strength, courage, and compassion; notable
21commanders in the United States Navy, including John Paul
22Jones, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Chester Nimitz, serve as role

1models to naval officers and citizens around the world; and
 
2    WHEREAS, In a world fraught with peril, the United States
3of America has the world's finest Navy, with the ability to
4project power across the sea and on shore by virtue of its
5surface and subsurface forces, carrier air power, and special
6warfare teams; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is home to Naval Station
8Great Lakes, which hosts the Navy's only Recruit Training
9Command, graduating 37,000 men and women annually to become our
10Navy's sailors; Illinois is also home to the Naval Hospital
11Corps School and the Navy's technical training schools for surf
12ace warfare excellence at Training Support Center Great Lakes,
13graduating more than 25,000 students annually; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Many Illinois citizens have gone to sea in the
15service of their country; many Navy ships have also been named
16for cities within and for our great State of Illinois,
17including the USS Illinois and the USS Springfield; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Thousands of Illinois citizens are currently
19serving or have served in the United States Navy at naval
20bases, joint forces commands, and Navy Operational Support
21units all over the globe; and

1    WHEREAS, The thousands of courageous men and women in
2uniform stand ready to defend the United States and its
3interests through overwhelming force and commitment to their
4nation and its citizens; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we designate the week of April 28 - May 4, 2014 as "Navy Week"
8in the State of Illinois in honor of this fine institution and
9its many dedicated men and women in uniform; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to Secretary of the Navy Raymond Mabus as a symbol of
12our esteem and respect.
