HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former
4United States Representative Lane Evans, who passed away on
5November 5, 2014; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans was born on August 4,
71951; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans was a graduate of
9Alleman High School in Rock Island; he subsequently earned
10degrees from Augustana College and Georgetown University Law
11Center; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans served his country with
13distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to
141977; during his stint in the military, he was posted in the
15United States and in Okinawa, Japan; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans served the citizens of
17the 17th Congressional District with pride as a member of the
18United States House of Representatives from 1982 to 2006;
19during his career as a Representative, he became well known by
20his constituents and peers as a man of the people who cared
21deeply for the well-being of his fellow veterans; and

1    WHEREAS, As a ranking member of the House Committee on
2Veterans' Affairs, Representative Lane Evans advocated for
3veterans of the Vietnam War who were exposed to Agent Orange
4and helped them to receive compensation for their exposure to
5the chemical agents; he led efforts to increase funding for
6various veteran assistance programs and was among the first
7members of Congress to take on issues like post-traumatic
8stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, which have affected
9many veterans of the Iraq War; he also championed numerous
10other initiatives, including legislation to ban landmines and
11the fight to keep the Rock Island Arsenal open, and was lauded
12for his votes against the North American Free Trade Agreement,
13the Gulf War, and the Iraq War; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans is survived by his 3
15brothers; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of
19former United States Representative Lane Evans; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Representative Lane Evans as an
