HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize Illinois State
4Representative Sandra Pihos for her 12 years of service and
5hard work on behalf of the people of the State of Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos has had a long and
7distinguished career in public service; she first served her
8local community for many years as a member and president of the
9Glenbard High School District #87 School Board before her
10election to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2002; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos has been a resident of Glen
12Ellyn for 41 years, having taught both elementary and middle
13school; she also worked as a high school guidance counselor and
14held the position of vice president of Pihos Enterprises, a
15restaurant management firm, from 1993 to 2000; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos is especially proud of her
17work in the Illinois House of Representatives as a long-time
18member of the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee,
19where she served as the Minority Spokesperson; she also served
20as the Minority Spokesperson for the Appropriations Elementary
21and Secondary Education, Disability Services, Aging, and
22Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Committees; and

1    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos was a member of numerous
2Committees, including the Consumer Protection, Accountability &
3 Administrative Review, Small Business Empowerment &
4Workforce Development, Appropriations-Human Services, Commerce
5and Business Development, Public Policy and Accountability,
6Tourism and Conventions, Mass Transit, Telecommunications,
7Housing, and Tollway Oversight Committees; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos served the General Assembly
9as a member of the Legislative Audit Commission, the Illinois
10Workforce Development Board, the Bi-Partisan Job Creation Task
11Force, the Charter Schools Task Force, the Joint Task Force on
12Community Colleges, as Chair of the Special Education Funding
13Task Force, Co-Chair of the Commission on the Elimination of
14Poverty, Co-Chair of the Internet Safety Task Force, and
15Co-Chair of the Advisory on Education Funding; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos will be remembered for her
17outstanding record of support for education, social security
18protection, consumer protection, identity theft, affordable
19housing, health awareness, children's health insurance, and
20environmental issues; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos was awarded the Philip J.
22Rock Center and School Meritorious Service Award, the Illinois

1Coalition of Community Blood Centers Representative of the Year
2Award, and has been recognized as Woman of the Year by the
3United Hellenic Voters; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos has also received the
5Legislator of the Year Award by several organizations,
6including the Illinois Optometric Association, the Illinois
7School Counselor Association, the Illinois Association of
8School Administrators, the DuPage Housing Action Coalition,
9the Ray Graham Association, the Western DuPage Special
10Recreation Association, the Illinois Association of School
11Social Workers, and the Northeastern DuPage Special Recreation
12Association; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos has received the Alzheimer's
14Advocacy Award, the American Conservative Union Foundation
15Award, the First Responder Emergency Preparedness and Disaster
16Response Readiness Award, the Illinois Coalition of Community
17Blood Centers Representative of the Year Award, the Housing
18Action Illinois Golden Trowel Award, the Guardian of Small
19Business Award, the Partners in Quality Award for her
20dedication to the advancement of quality in older adult
21services, the DuPage Center for Independent Living Spirit of
22ADA Award, the Illinois Farm Bureau Activator Award, the
23American Cancer Society Regional Advocacy Partner Award, and
24the Illinois Environmental Council Award; and

1    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos is the former co-chair of the
2Conference of Women Legislators and the current Illinois State
3Director of Women in Government; she is also the current
4co-chair of the NEW Leadership Program, which hones the
5leadership skills of young women, and the co-founder of the
6Illinois Alzheimer Legislators Alliance; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Representative Pihos serves on several boards,
8including Giant Steps Illinois, the Partnership for
9Educational Progress Foundation, Family Shelter Service, the
10DuPage Regional Leadership Council of the American Cancer
11Society, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we congratulate our friend and colleague, State Representative
16Sandra Pihos, on her retirement from the Illinois of House of
17Representatives and wish her the best in her future endeavors;
18and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to Representative Pihos as a symbol of our respect
21and esteem.
