SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Edward B. Schmalzer of McHenry, who passed away on September 7, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Edward Schmalzer was born in Chicago on July 16, 1916 to John and Josephine (nee Zartler) Schmalzer; and

WHEREAS, Edward Schmalzer was employed as a traffic manager in the petroleum industry, and began his career with Sinclair Oil; he also worked for Arco, Atlantic Richfield, and eventually retired from British Petroleum in 1975; he often told others that the highlight of his career was working from his Atlantic Richfield office at Rockerfeller Center looking out over New York City; and

WHEREAS, Edward Schmalzer enjoyed being active in his grandchildren and great-grandchildrens' lives, often serving as their "taxi service" for their many activities; he loved to show his support by attending their school and sporting events; a favorite pastime throughout his life was watching sports and he often spoke of the thrill he experienced as a young man being able to play in a 1933 Junior Softball championship at Wrigley Field; most recently, he was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in McHenry; he was active in church activities throughout his lifetime, as well as the condo association in Crystal Lake; and

WHEREAS, Edward Schmalzer lived in New Jersey for approximately 15 years and then was a resident of Crystal Lake for over 30 years; he lived in McHenry for the past 9 years; and

WHEREAS, Edward Schmalzer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a sister, Lorraine Ventrelli; and 3 brothers, John, Robert, and Julius Schmalzer; and

WHEREAS, Edward Schmalzer is survived by his daughter, Carol (Charles) Spinelli; 2 granddaughters, Julie (Shane Winters) Gehring and Nancy (Daniel) Beffa; 2 great-granddaughters, Madelyn and Anna Gehring; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Edward B. Schmalzer, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Edward Schmalzer as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
