SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death
3for both men and women, and within every ethnic population, in
4Illinois, the United States, and the world; this year, lung
5cancer killed more Americans than breast, prostate, and colon
6cancer combined; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 2012, an estimated 226,160 new cases of lung
8cancer were diagnosed in the United States (116,470 among men
9and 109,640 among women); and
 
10    WHEREAS, In 2012, there were an estimated 160,340 deaths
11from lung cancer in the United States (87,750 among men and
1272,590 among women), accounting for about 27% of all cancer
13deaths; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In 2012, there were an estimated 9,190 people
15diagnosed with lung cancer in the State of Illinois; it is
16estimated that more than 6,590 residents succumbed to the
17disease; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Causes of lung cancer include smoking, secondhand
19smoke, exposure to toxins and known carcinogens, and genetic
20abnormalities; and

1    WHEREAS, 80% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people
2who have never smoked or who have quit smoking; and
 
3    WHEREAS, An estimated 90% of lung cancer deaths among men
4and nearly 80% of lung cancer deaths among women are attributed
5to smoking; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lung cancer has a poor prognosis; even with
7treatment, people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer have
8a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Increased awareness and coordination among all
10stakeholders, including federal and state governments,
11providers, patient groups, community leaders and
12organizations, the public, businesses, and researchers, is
13critical to promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of
14lung cancer; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the month
17of November of 2013 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State
18of Illinois.
