HOUSE RESOLUTION 1205

WHEREAS, In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, creating "National Correctional Officers' Week"; and

WHEREAS, Each year, the first full week in May is recognized as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, commemorating the contributions of correctional officers and personnel who work in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country; and

WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers' Week provides a platform allowing the community to recognize correctional officers, both past and present, for the critical and difficult service they provide to the communities they serve; and

WHEREAS, The correctional system is intended to protect the public by separating violent offenders from the community, deterring others from offending, and rehabilitating offenders for reintegration into the community upon release; and

WHEREAS, Preparing offenders for their return to their communities is critical to protecting public safety; and

WHEREAS, Working in correctional facilities is demanding as personnel must maintain a constant state of heightened vigilance and adhere to strict security protocols; and

WHEREAS, Corrections staff must perform their duties within harsh physical environments and with the threat of repeated exposure to violent events; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize May 1-7, 2016 as being National Correctional Officers' Week to honor the efforts of correctional officers across the State; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Illinois Correctional Association as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
