HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Harvey Nathaniel, who passed away on April 25, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Nathaniel was born in Webb, Mississippi to Verlee and Johnny Nathaniel on December 16, 1942; he was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church in 1953; he obtained his education in Chicago at Douglas Elementary School, John Marshall High School, and Roosevelt University; in 1963, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and received an Honorable Discharge; he married Lorraine Alston in June of 1972; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Nathaniel worked for Zenith as a general manager until 1980; he began a successful career with the City of Chicago beginning in 1980; he was Deputy Assessor for Cook County, Precinct Captain for the 9th ward, Secretary of the Democratic organization for the 9th ward, Foreman for Streets and Sanitation, Assistant Ward Superintendent for the 9th ward, President of the Democratic Party for the 28th Ward, and Ward Superintendent of the 28th Ward; he retired after 32 years of service to the City of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Nathaniel was active in his community and with veterans; he was Treasurer of New Voice Community Prevention Service and President of Guardians of the People; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Nathaniel enjoyed fishing, telling stories, and making up contests such as the Best Christmas Lights Contest; his greatest joys were his grandkids, Jordan and Justin; he loved to watch them play sports and take them to different restaurants and play with them their favorite game, Hide and Seek; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Nathaniel was preceded in death by his mother, Verlee (Willie) Jackson; his father, Johnny Nathaniel; and his brothers, Johnny, Charles, Walter, and Leon; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Nathaniel is survived by his daughter, Nerlean Iva (Phillip) Nathaniel; his granddaughter, Jordan; his grandson, Justin; his sisters, Nerlean (Elbert), Darlean, Earlean (Sam), Eileen, Margaree, and Verlee (Leaonard); his brothers, Willie and Ernest; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Harvey Nathaniel, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harvey Nathaniel as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
