SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Muriel Claire Kotchever Schnierow, who
4passed away on April 24, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Muriel was born on February 1, 1928 in Rogers
6Park; her parents were Saul and Estelle Kotchever; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Muriel attended Sullivan High School and the
8University of Wisconsin; she subsequently moved to Oak Park,
9where she spent 20 years as a successful real estate broker and
10was the first woman to sell commercial real estate in Oak Park;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Muriel was an accomplished singer and pianist; she
13sang with the Oak Park River Forest Symphony Chorus in
14cathedrals all over Europe and worked with the Nineteenth
15Century Club, involving herself in their music program as well
16as mentoring many young aspiring musicians; she was also a
17member of and donor to Unity Church; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Later in her life, Muriel became a political
19activist and consultant with the progressive faction of the
20Democratic Party; she was called a "key supporter" of New York
21Senator, Charles Schumer's successful 2006 campaign and worked

1tirelessly on the presidential campaigns of President Barack
2Obama in 2008 and 2012; she most recently became an
3enthusiastic supporter of the presidential campaign of Senator
4Bernie Sanders; she also lobbied Vice President Joe Biden and
5other Democrats to focus their time and energy on legislation
6to combat domestic violence, child abuse, and protecting the
7most vulnerable; she was known as fearless, persuasive, and
8passionate about her causes and tried to build coalitions and
9grow partnerships in support of change; and
 
10    WHEREAS, During her final illness, Muriel was a generous
11donor to charities and political organizations like Amnesty
12International and MoveOn.org; she left a posthumous donation to
13the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Muriel was preceded in death by her husband,
15Gerson; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Muriel is survived by her daughter Nancy; her son,
17Neil; her stepdaughters, Laurie and Beth; her daughter-in-law,
18Karen; her two grandchildren, Dean and Niko; and her cousin,
19Gloria; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
22family and friends, mourn the passing of Muriel Claire

2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Muriel Schnierow as an expression of
4our sympathy.
