SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of John L. Davis, who passed away on June
422, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Davis was born in Boston, Massachusetts; he
6graduated from Indiana University, where he was an All-American
7defensive back on the 1949, 1950, and 1951 Indiana University
8football teams; in 3 years, he did not miss a minute of
9defensive play, and, in his last 2 seasons, the Hoosiers ranked
10in the top 3 in the nation in pass defense; he served in the
11United States Army; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After graduating with distinction, John Davis was
13a third round draft pick of the Chicago Cardinals in 1952, but
14declined the contract offer in order to continue his education
15and coaching; he continued as assistant freshman coach in 1952
16and 1953 and advanced to become Indiana University's varsity
17backfield coach in 1954; he later moved to the Joliet area and
18embarked on a long career with Joliet Township High Schools,
19where he held numerous teaching, coaching, and administrative
20positions, including Dean of Students and Vice-Principal; upon
21retiring, he served as the Assistant Athletic Director for
22Indiana University; and

1    WHEREAS, John Davis was an avid outdoorsman and spent many
2summers running a boys summer camp, Ottawa Trails, in the Upper
3Peninsula of Michigan; and
 
4    WHEREAS, John Davis is survived by his wife of 59 years,
5Dorothy (nee Cassidy) Davis; his children, John T. Davis,
6Madonna (Mike) Gale, Gerard (Crystal) Davis, Kathleen (Len)
7Capristo, and Dennis (Claudia) Davis; his grandchildren,
8Michael Gale, Andrew Davis, Patrick Gale, Nicholas Davis,
9Gabrielle Davis, Ryne Davis, Sheridan Davis, and Tyler
10Capristo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be
11it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14John L. Davis, and extend our sincere condolences to his
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of John Davis as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
