HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Corn is a vital part of the Illinois economy and
3should be recognized by becoming the State grain of Illinois;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Illinois is the second largest corn producing
6state; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Corn takes up over 12 million acres of the 27
8million acres of farmland; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Illinois has roughly 36.5 million acres of land;
10meaning a third of all the land in the State is dedicated to
11corn; and
 
12    WHEREAS, According to the University of Illinois
13Urbana-Champaign, in 2014, Illinois produced more than 130
14billion pounds of corn; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Illinois is the second largest exporter of corn,
16exporting over 50% of all corn it produces; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Illinois alone produces 17% of all corn grown in
18the United States; and

1    WHEREAS, In 2015, Illinois farmers made over $10 billion in
2corn sales; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5urge corn to be declared the State grain of Illinois and
6recognize all the wealth and prosperity this crop brings to the
7State; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That we recognize the members of the Pittsfield
9Future Farmers of America and the local agricultural education
10community for taking the initiative in bringing this issue to
11the Illinois General Assembly; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Pittsfield Future Farmers of America as a
14symbol of our esteem and respect.
