HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 175th anniversary of the
4founding of the Pike Press; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Pike Press began in 1842 with the first
6newspaper in Pike County, The Sucker and Farmers Record; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The paper's name was changed to The Whig Free
8Press in 1846, which was owned and edited by John Nicolay from
91849 to 1856; the name was changed to the Pike County Journal
10in 1860, in which, Nicolay, one of Abraham Lincoln's three
11private secretaries from Pike County, wrote his editorial
12endorsement of Abraham Lincoln for president in February of
131960; in March of 1868, the paper became The Old Flag; in 1893,
14the paper was renamed The Pike County Republican; finally, in
151968 it became The Pike Press; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Pike Press is celebrating its 175th
17anniversary with the June 7 edition of the paper by offering
18full page ads for the bargain price of $175 for that issue;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1recognize the 175th anniversary of the Pike Press, and we wish
2it many more wonderful years; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the Pike Press as a symbol of our respect and
5esteem.
