HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives would like to recognize Pawnee Methodist
4Church on the occasion of its 165th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The first Methodist class was established in 1852
6by pastor Rev. A. Bradshaw; the congregation met in the home of
7the Bridges family from 1852 to 1857 before it was moved to the
8Oak Hill School; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The first Methodist church, a small one-room
10building, was built in 1857 at the corner of what is now First
11and Jefferson Streets in Pawnee; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Sunday school enrollment grew from 20 in 1865 to
13137 in 1902; plans were made to build a new church and
14parsonage at the corner of what is now Sixth and Washington
15Streets, where the church is presently located; and
 
16    WHEREAS, On May 28, 1967, ground was broken for a new
17education building, which was dedicated on January 28, 1968;
18and
 
19    WHEREAS, On July 18, 1976, the congregation voted to tear
20down the old church and build a new sanctuary; ground was

1broken in August of 1977 and, in December of 1978, the
2congregation moved into the new sanctuary that connected to the
3education building; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Over the years, Pawnee Methodist Church has gone
5through many changes and looks forward to what the future
6holds; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9recognize the 165th anniversary of Pawnee Methodist Church, and
10we wish it many more wonderful years; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Pawnee Methodist Church as a symbol of our respect
13and esteem.
