HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, the members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize Trinity High School on the
4occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Trinity High School is a Catholic
6college-preparatory high school for young women; Trinity has
7earned an excellent reputation as a premier high school with a
8strong commitment to educating young women and preparing them
9for the future: intellectually, spiritually, socially, and
10morally; for 100 years, Trinity has been a cornerstone of the
11Oak Park-River Forest community; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In July 1917, five Dominican sisters from
13Sinsinawa, Wisconsin purchased land on the northwestern edge of
14River Forest and founded Rosary House, a Catholic high school
15for girls; recruiting students proved to be difficult, but by
16the following year, 15 students were enrolled; they were called
17the Fortunate Fifteen, one for each mystery of the rosary; for
18the next four years, a grade level was added until Rosary House
19was a four-year high school; the first class of 28 students
20graduated in 1922, and that same year, the school was
21accredited and admitted to the North Central Association of
22Colleges and High Schools; the school established the first
23Girl Scout troop in River Forest and continued to add

1extra-curricular activities, including baseball, croquet,
2basketball, a drama club, a camera club, an annual yearbook,
3and an alumnae club; Rosary House continued to grow; the school
4was moved, and the name was changed to Trinity High School in
51926; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The next several decades brought continued change
7and success to Trinity, including increased enrollment, the
8construction of new buildings and additions, an interview with
9Eleanor Roosevelt, a charter from the Quill and Scroll, the
10international honor society for high school journalists, a
11first-class rating from the National Scholastic Press
12Association, participation in the National Merit Scholarship
13program, the introduction of an Advisory Board and the
14formation of a Board of Directors; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Trinity's tradition of academic excellence
16continued with the introduction of the prestigious
17International Baccalaureate Diploma program in 1994; the
18program encompasses a rigorous pre-university course of
19studies designed as a two-year curriculum covering six academic
20areas; in addition to the traditional liberal arts curriculum,
21students take a Theory of Knowledge class, fulfill a 150 hour
22service requirement, and write a 4,000 word essay on a topic of
23their choice; shortly after introducing the International
24Baccalaureate Diploma program, Trinity also implemented block

1scheduling, which is based on the collegiate model; Trinity was
2the first Catholic school in the Chicago Archdiocese to offer
3this program; and
 
4    WHEREAS, By choosing to remain a single-gender school,
5Trinity affirmed its commitment to challenging and preparing
6young women to be tomorrow's leaders; Trinity's graduates have
7been and will continue to be innovative, productive, and
8leading members in all aspects of society; the lessons they
9have learned at Trinity High School have helped them build
10successful careers, loving families, and better communities;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Trinity still embodies the same spirit of those
13first Fortunate Fifteen girls and the same dedication of the
14pioneer sisters who began Rosary House High School; this spirit
15and dedication to education, leadership, and faith will guide
16Trinity High School through its 100th anniversary and many
17years beyond; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20recognize Trinity High School on the 100th anniversary of its
21founding, and we wish them many more successful years; and be
22it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to Trinity High School as an expression of our esteem
3and respect.
