HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 50th anniversary of the
4founding of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sargent Shriver inspired those around him to
7believe that everyone deserves the right to equal access to
8justice and opportunity; today, the Shriver Center is one of
9the nation's leading advocates for the poor, giving a voice to
10people living in poverty; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Shriver Center works to ensure that laws and
12policies provide low-income people with access to adequate
13health care, decent housing, a safety net, and opportunities to
14achieve their full potential; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Shriver Center advocates across a range of
16issues important to people living in poverty, including asset
17building, budget and tax issues, criminal justice, early
18childhood, education, healthcare, housing, and issues
19affecting women and girls; it provides free legal
20representation and represents clients in state and federal
21court and before administrative agencies, both in class actions
22and in individual cases; and

1    WHEREAS, The Shriver Center is a national network of
2lawyers, community organizers, activists, researchers,
3litigators, and philanthropists from every state; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Sargent Shriver famously and frequently posed two
5questions: "What have you done today to make this a better
6world? What will you do tomorrow?"; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9recognize the 50th anniversary the Sargent Shriver National
10Center on Poverty Law, and we wish them many more years of
11success; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Shriver Center as a symbol of our respect and
14esteem.
