HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Herbert
4Lee Hedgeman, who passed away on December 29, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was born in Chicago to Fannie Mae
6Hedgeman on November 7, 1928; he attended Chicago Public
7Schools and, at the age of 16, joined the United States Army
8and served during World War II and the Korean War; after World
9War II ended, he remained in Germany performing the saxophone
10throughout the country; he studied pre-law at Wilberforce
11University, where in 1954 he began a lifelong involvement with
12the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity; he married Tricka Harris in
131971; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman worked as a case worker with the
15Cook County Department of Public Aid; he then began a career in
16real estate and became known as a "blockbuster" for his talent
17of integrating various neighborhoods in Chicago; he was the
18first African-American realtor at the Rubloff real estate
19company; creating economic development for underdeveloped
20communities was a major passion of his; throughout his life he
21was passionate about helping the African-American community;

1    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman purchased the Sportsman's Inn
2Motel in 1973; he had a 50-year career in business and invested
3in numerous properties in Illinois, Michigan, and Georgia; he
4was the sponsor of WVON's "The Bob Shaw" show and one of the
5founders of We Can Inc.; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman started the Herbert Hedgeman
7Foundation to provide students with financial assistance for
8their Wilberforce University education; he was known in his
9community for his generosity and kindness; he thrived to bring
10out the best in people and help them become successful in their
11endeavors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was preceded in death by his
13wife, Tricka; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman is survived by his son, Kenneth
15Hedgeman; his daughters, Denita Hedgeman, Kori Scurlock, TK
16Karadzovski, and Cici Foster (Kevin); his grandchildren,
17Avante and Dante Hedgeman and Diamond and Imani Foster; his
18great-grandchild, Ayanna Hedgeman; his faithful dog, Ace; and
19numerous cousins and friends; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22mourn the passing of Herbert Lee Hedgeman, and extend our

1sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
2and loved him; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Herbert Hedgeman as an expression of
5our deepest sympathy.
