HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of
4Norris Electric Cooperative on the 80th anniversary of their
5cooperative; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Norris Electric Cooperative was officially formed
7on September 18, 1938, in Newton through the hard work and
8dedication of a handful of local residents wanting to improve
9living and farming conditions for themselves and their
10neighbors; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Because of the lack of density, it simply was not
12possible for the for-profit utilities to make a profit serving
13rural areas with only a few farms or homes per mile of electric
14line; with the help of loans from the Rural Electrification
15Administration (REA), the people living in these rural areas
16banded together to form member-owned and member-governed
17electric cooperatives; and
 
18    WHEREAS, This group of local residents went door to door
19signing up their neighbors to become members of Norris Electric
20Cooperative and convincing them that a cooperative would bring
21lights and power to the rural area; and

1    WHEREAS, Their hard work paid off and Norris Electric
2Cooperative's lines were first energized on December 24, 1939,
3initially serving 550 member-owners in six counties; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Norris Electric Cooperative continues to provides
5reliable electric service to member-owners in Clark, Crawford,
6Cumberland, Effingham, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, and Wabash
7counties; and
 
8    WHEREAS, For 80 years, the cooperative has served their
9member-owners based on seven guiding principles: voluntary and
10open membership, member-elected and controlled boards of
11directors, members' economic participation, autonomy and
12independence, education and training, cooperation among
13cooperatives, and concern for community; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16congratulate the members of the Norris Electric Cooperative on
17the 80th anniversary of their cooperative; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to Norris Electric Cooperative as a symbol of our
20esteem and respect.
