HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John S.
4"Jack" Shales of Elgin, who passed away on January 26, 2018;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jack Shales was born in Elgin on November 13,
71930; he graduated from Elgin High School in 1949; he served in
8the United States Marine Corp in Korea from 1951 until 1953; he
9married Marlene Kane, his high school sweetheart, in 1954; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jack Shales began working at Illinois Hydraulic
11Construction Co. in 1954; after 27 years, he co-founded the
12construction company Seagren/Shales Inc.; in 2001, he was a
13founding partner of Shales McNutt Construction; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jack Shales believed people are brought into the
15world to aid others; he volunteered for the United Way of Elgin
16for more than 60 years; he also served on the boards of the
17Salvation Army and the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation,
18and he emceed the Easter Seals telethons; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Jack Shales was devoted to Elgin and was viewed as
20an icon in the community; because of his good sense of humor,
21and his belief that "you always have time to help other

1people," he was often tasked with encouraging others to
2volunteer; in 2004, The United Way made him a lifetime director
3of the group and named the "Spirit of Community award for him;
4in 2013, the City of Elgin honored him with its "Extra Mile
5Hero" Award; in 2011, he and his wife were honored by the City
6of Elgin and received an Image Award for their community
7service, which that year included sponsoring the Community
8Thanksgiving Luncheon and posing as the king and queen of the
9library's Royal Feast to raise money for a teen center; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jack Shales is survived by his wife, Marlene; his
11children, Michael (Trecia) Shales, Kristin (Doug) Durham,
12Heidi (Jeff) Baudry, and John (Shelly) Shales; his
13grandchildren, Anna (Frank) Machniak, Gwen Shales (Kyle
14Johnson), Leah (Dan) Roe, Jack F. Shales, Raven and Hope
15Shales, Kyle and Jesse (Sabrina) Durham, Zak and Alec Baudry,
16Sydney, Matthew, Ellen, and Jake Shales; and his
17great-grandchildren, Asher and Etta Johnson, Lillian and
18Timothy Machniak, and Baby Roe (due this summer); therefore, be
19it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22mourn the passing of John S. "Jack" Shales and extend our
23sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
24and loved him; and be it further

3deepest sympathy.
