HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate John Grey of Winchester as
4he celebrates 40 years as Sergeant at Arms of the Julian Wells
5Post 442 American Legion; we also recognize his dedication in
6leading said Post at every parade and public event in
7Winchester and throughout Scott County, including the Fourth of
8July parades and the World Famous Burgoo Festival; and
 
9    WHEREAS, John Grey served in the United States Army for two
10years and was a member of the Fourth Infantry Division in
11Vietnam, where he was with the first American ground unit to
12fight in Cambodia; he received many medals for his
13distinguished service to his country, including two Purple
14Hearts, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Republic of
15Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; and
 
16    WHEREAS, After he was discharged from the Army, John Grey
17continued his public service by working as a mail carrier in
18the City of Winchester for 33 years; he accumulated more than
19112,000 miles by walking and running his route; he added
20countless more miles with his training for marathons; and
 
21    WHEREAS, John Grey ran for the Winchester Community Unit
22School District Board and won three elections; he also shared

1his knowledge and love of running by first volunteering for,
2and then coaching, the track teams for both boys and girls; and
 
3    WHEREAS, John Grey's service in Vietnam continues to affect
4his health, as he still has shrapnel in his leg and is battling
5cancer due to the side effects of Agent Orange; despite these
6challenges, he maintains a positive attitude; and
 
7    WHEREAS, When asked about his birthday, John Grey always
8states that it is on All Saint's Day before he says November 1,
9a request by his grandmother that he still honors; and
 
10    WHEREAS, John Grey is devoted to his two daughters, Hannah
11and Cassie, and to his grandchildren, Carmen and Eli, his
12siblings, Elaine Fletcher, Nancy Main, Laura Wood, Barb
13Harbison, and Tom Grey, and all of his nieces and nephews;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17congratulate John Grey for his service to his country, the
18State of Illinois, and the community and students of
19Winchester; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to John Grey as an expression of our esteem and
