SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Rex L. Brown of Decatur, who passed away
4on September 10, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Rex Brown was born in Harvel to Lloyd and Helen
6Sanders Brown on October 3, 1930; during his youth, he helped
7run his family's grain farm, cattle ranch, and also Brown's
8Grocery; he attended Knox College and graduated from Illinois
9State University and University of Illinois Law School; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Rex Brown moved his family to Decatur so he could
11practice law; he was the Senior Partner at Brown, Hawkins &
12Basola; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Rex Brown was a member of the Decatur, Illinois
14State, and American Bar Associations; he was president of the
15Decatur Bar Association from 1996-1997; as a Bar committee
16member, he lobbied the County to provide the judicial robes for
17the Macon County Judges, a practice which continues today; in
181998, he was admitted to practice law before the United States
19Supreme Court, and he received the Illinois State Bar
20Association Board of Governors Award in 2002; he was an Adjunct
21Professor at Richland Community College where he taught
22business and real estate law; and

1    WHEREAS, Rex Brown was a prominent figure in the Republican
2Party; he was a member of the Young Republicans, a precinct
3committeeman for over 60 years, chairman of the Macon County
4Republican Party, and delegate to the National Convention; he
5served on the Macon County Board and was chairman for a year;
6he instituted the displaying of the United States flag in the
7courtrooms, and he commissioned and created the Macon County
8flag and Macon County seal, which are also displayed in the
9courtrooms; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Rex Brown served on, chaired, and was a trustee or
11member of numerous committees, including Illinois Standing
12Committee on Legal Services and Elder Law, General Assembly for
13the Illinois State Bar Association, Macon County Regional
14Planning Commission, Macon County Mental Health Association,
15the Oakley Dam and Reservoir Advisory Committee, Lincoln Trails
16Council for Boy Scouts, Elks Club, and the YMCA; he was a
17director of the Bank of Maroa and for the Metro Decatur Chamber
18of Commerce; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Rex Brown played and managed various slow-pitch
20softball teams and traveled throughout the Midwest for
21championship tournaments; he enjoyed tent camping with his
22family and traveling; he was a devoted Illini fan and attended
23nearly every football and basketball game; he was the president

1of the Decatur Illini Club and hosted the Illini Sweet Corn
2Roast for over 25 years; he loved gardening, and he grew his
3own grapes and made his own wine; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Rex Brown was preceded in death by his parents;
5his brother, Max; his sister, Carol Ann; and his stepmother,
6Helen Martin Brown; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Rex Brown is survived by his wife of 67 years,
8Marilyn M.; his children, Bruce (Marilyn K.), Cynthia (Bill)
9Zimdar, Britt (Laurie), and Brad (Michelle); his ten
10grandchildren; his seven great-grandchildren; his sister,
11Sharon Rose Bright; and his sister-in-law, Sue Brown;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Rex L. Brown, and we extend our sincere condolences to his
16family, friends, and those who knew and loved him; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Rex Brown as an expression of our
20deepest sympathy.
