SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Carl E. Dawson, who passed away on August
416, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Carl Dawson was born in Chicago to Dorothy Bush
6and Robert Dawson on June 16, 1930; his family lived in the
7West Woodlawn and Englewood neighborhoods before moving to
8Georgetown, where he attended elementary and high school; while
9in high school, he became a star on the track team and held the
10high jump record for many years; in his last year, he won four
11different track honors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Carl Dawson returned to Chicago to work at the
13United States Post Office; at 21 years of age, he was drafted
14into the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Korea
15for two years, serving as a corporal; he was awarded the Korean
16Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the
17National Defence Service Medal; he received an honorable
18discharge in 1953 and was transferred to the Marine Reserve
19until 1959; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In March of 1954, Carl Dawson returned to work at
21the post office; he married Grace J. Graves on October 6, 1954
22and they had two sons, Carlton and Clark, a grandson, Kyle, and

1a granddaughter, Clarke; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Carl Dawson and his wife sponsored five Ethiopian
3children, bringing them to Chicago, becoming their American
4parents, mentoring them, nurturing them, and guiding them into
5adulthood; he also shared his home with friends and relatives
6who were in need; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 1961, Carl Dawson took the federal entrance
8exam and started working for the Veterans Administration; after
910 years in many positions there, he moved to the United States
10Department of Labor, where he rose to the position of assistant
11director and received numerous awards for outstanding service;
12he returned to college and graduated from Roosevelt University
13in 1970; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Carl Dawson served as a deacon and trustee and
15sang in the choir at his church; he taught high school and
16college mathematics at Greater Bethesda's Saturday Free
17School; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Carl Dawson was a Scout Leader, president of civic
19clubs, and a member of The Chicago Assembly; he participated in
20Toastmaster organizations and enjoyed chess and golf; he always
21encouraged his wife, sons, and grandson to do their personal
22best; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Carl E. Dawson, and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Carl Dawson as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
